I stumbled upon this cover just browsing around the internet. I am a covers afficionado and have heard plenty of covers of this classic, most taking it and turning it into some punk-rock rendition of Lauper’s 1983 anthem of female solidarity (which is funny because the song, originally, was from a male’s perspective). What made me download this surprising gem is the artist, Greg Laswell. He opened for Rachael Yamagata when MLA and I saw her at the Troubadour. While I found him to be a solid live act, I didn’t care too much for him. That is, until I heard this. Everybody, break out your candles. Oh wait, it’s not 1983 anymore. Cellphones.
